Fonts for visually impaired people
As a visually impaired person, reading is more challenging for me than for most people. Colors as well as fonts have an huge impact and readability and comfort.
Here are some fonts designed to help increase legibility for visually impaired people.
Luciole
Luciole (french for “firefly”) is an open-source font specially designed to improve the readability and comfort for people with low vision. You can read more in the researcher paper.
APHont
APHont is font that was developped by the American Printing House, a nonprofit organization creating accessible elements for blind and low vision persons. APHont bears characteristics that have been shown to enhance reading speed, comprehension, and comfort for people using large prints.
Atkinson Hyperlegible
Atkinson Hyperlegible is a 2019 font intended to be optimally legible for low vision readers. Its succesor Atkinson Hyperlegible Next was release in 2025
I have personally used Luciole as the main system font for some times now and it really helps.
